A thought occurred to me today in a moment of deep reflection. I have always heard the saying, "When God closes a door, He opens a window." I am not sure how or when this popular saying was first used to console someone going through a difficult time, but it always seems to be stated. I think I finally have a better understanding of exactly what the popular phrase really means. I mean think about it...a door is a lot easier to pass through than a window.
If you have ever been locked out of your house or for whatever reason you had the cause to climb in or out of a window, this is not an easy task. First, you often have to pick yourself up, usually obtaining some scrapes or bruises in the process. Next, you slowly crawl through the small opening, risking even more abuse. Then, once you are halfway through you might feel some uncertainty of what awaits you on the other side. Will it be easy or hard? Will I fall or land safely on the other side? What if I get stuck?
Many of life's trials and tribulations seem to fit this scenario. When the proverbial door is slammed in your face and you feel lost, you look for answers or guidance. God may open a window after closing the door. Nobody said it would be easy to climb through that window. All those scrapes and bruises are lessons that we must learn along life's journey. Sometimes they leave scars that we can't see on the outside, but are all part of the road to recovery.
I have had many doors closed and windows opened in my lifetime. Sometimes it has been more difficult to climb through those windows than others, but I always find my way through.
